The Organic Buckwheat Pillow

Our organic buckwheat pillow is hypoallergenic, toxic-chemical free (no flame retardants, no Formaldehyde or other short-chain aldehydes, no heavy metals, no endocrine disruptors, no chlorinated benzenes, no ammonium compounds, no chlorinated paraffins), anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-dustmite, temperature regulating, and certified safe enough for babies!

Organic Buckwheat Pillows are a very unique type of pillow, with a wide array of health and wellness benefits! Indeed, organic buckwheat pillows are known to help improve one’s body posture, as it enables you to comfortably sleep in the anatomically correct position. The buckwheat hulls mould perfectly to the shape of your head, making the perfect surface for your head and neck to rest upon. Some medical professionals even prescribe organic buckwheat pillows, as a natural and simple way to improve their patients’ body posture!

An organic buckwheat pillow will adjust to your head movements. The buckwheat hulls shift and mould according to the shape of your head, and then stay put so you can have undisturbed sleep! These pillows also have a nice soothing head massaging effect, thanks to the triangular shape of the buckwheat hulls. They’ve even proven to help people who have migraines and headaches!

Also, organic buckwheat is anti-microbial, anti-mildew, anti-dustmite and anti-bacterial. So that means, your bed will stay nice and clean, easy-peasy.

How to Care for the
Organic Buckwheat Pillow?

Your organic buckwheat pillow is really fuss-free. Indeed, because organic buckwheat is a very dry material that really doesn’t absorb anything, it doesn’t need to be washed. By changing your pillow case regularly (we recommend at least once per week for maximum durability of all pillows!), you won’t need to ever wash the actual pillow! If by mistake something gets on the pillow casing, all you need to do is empty the organic buckwheat hulls into a dry and clean bag or container, and wash the pillow casing at 30°C/40°C. Once it’s dry, just transfer the buckwheat hulls back into the case, and voilà!

FAQ

“Where are your pillows made?”
All our organic pillows are skillfully handcrafted in our design studio, near the beautiful Julian Alps in Slovenia. Every Aisling Pillow, is crafted by the House of Pillows team! The Aisling Pillows are made-to-order: that means the Aisling Pillow you place an order for, is made specially for you! Yeah… Just taking things “off the shelf” doesn’t feel right to us!
“Is your packaging sustainable, too?”
Yes! We package your Aisling Pillow in eco-friendly packaging! It’s 100% is recyclable, and the box is high enough quality to be reusable and/or re-purposed (we hear cats like boxes!). There is also a personalised label with your name on it, and a special little message inside The House of Pillows signature blue envelope. Every package is made personal. Details: Only the box handles are (recyclable) plastic – we’re looking for a better solution! In the mean time, please keep them on the box for further use, or recycle them. The labels are made of biodegradable, natural and recycled paper. They use a natural, water based glue which is more eco-friendly than normal glues. As for the paper and envelopes, they are also sustainably sourced from the UK.
“What do your certifications really mean?”
Certifications give us a higher level of certainty about what kind of materials & supply chains we’re supporting. We currently have the following three certifications. Here is what they mean.

Oeko-Tex 100, Class 1

Oeko-Tex certifies that the materials have been scientifically tested in independent labs, and are certified safe for humans. Certified Class 1 products, are safe enough for babies and toddlers up to 3 years of age. The labs test for all possible levels of toxicity. They make sure the materials don’t contain anything dangerous that would cause harm to a person coming in contact with them. Oeko-Tex labs tests for over 200 toxic elements, including some that aren’t even required by state law to test.

GOTS

GOTS is the Global Organic Textile Standard. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria. They are backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. The goal of the standard is to have world-wide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.

Fairtrade

The International FAIRTRADE Certification Mark is an independent certification mark used in over 50 countries. It appears on products as an independent guarantee that a product is produced according to Fairtrade political standards.

“What are the benefits of organic buckwheat pillows?”
Organic buckwheat pillows have many benefits for sleep. Indeed, organic buckwheat pillows are great for “hot sleepers”, or summer nights, as they have a strong natural cooling effect. What’s more, organic buckwheat pillows always adjust to the shape of your head and neck. Some medical professionals even recommend organic buckwheat pillows as a way to naturally improve your posture, reduce neck and back pain, and even reduce migraines. Organic buckwheat pillows are also antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti dustmite and hypoallergenic. Finally, organic buckwheat pillows can easily last a good ten years! And if you wish to “freshen up” your organic buckwheat pillow, you can replace the organic buckwheat hulls in the pillow, by purchasing new ones on our shop page!
"Are all Organic Buckwheat pillows created equal?"
Sadly, no. It is common practice for buckwheat hulls to be washed and sprayed with chemicals. Buying  an organic buckwheat hull pillow is always the safest bet, and will keep you from breathing in potentially harmful chemicals, such as pesticides, flame retardants or paraffins.
“Are organic buckwheat pillows soft?”
Organic buckwheat pillows aren’t soft like wool, cotton or natural latex. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have other amazing qualities! (Read the benefits of Organic Buckwheat Pillows here.)
“I’m used to soft pillows… Will I be able to sleep on an organic buckwheat pillow?”
To be completely honest, if you’re not used to sleeping on firmer surfaces, it might take a few days to get used to. But once you do, we promise you will start waking up with fewer pains in your back, neck and shoulders! And you might even notice positive differences in your natural body posture. Organic buckwheat pillows are a natural remedy to reduce ailments, including chronic migraines. Indeed, organic buckwheat hulls have a nice “massaging” effect on your head, thanks to their tiny triangular shape. Organic buckwheat pillows also keep your body in the anatomically perfect position all night. This is another reason why they help reduce back, neck and shoulder pain, and even help improve your natural body posture! So if you’re interested in trying an organic buckwheat pillow, we promise that the pros far outweigh the minor adjustment period!
“What are the benefits of organic cotton?”
Organic cotton is one of the best material for bedding! Indeed, organic cotton is very breathable and transmits moisture away from your skin. This allows you to feel fresh and dry all night. Organic cotton can absorb ⅕ of its weight in moisture, and still feel completely dry. Considering that our bodies release at least 300ml (around 16oz.) of body vapour per night while we sleep, organic cotton comes to the rescue to keep us comfortable and dry. What’s more, organic cotton provides breathable insulation. It keeps you cool in the summer, and thermal insulation during the winter. And unlike synthetics, organic cotton is hypoallergenic. Indeed, it doesn’t cause skin problems, or make preexisting skin problems (such as eczema, dermatitis) worse. Our high thread count organic cotton, makes our Zoe Duvet incredibly soft, super breathable and very durable. It has high tensile strength, making it strong, durable and less likely to rip or tear. Visit this page to learn more about the benefits of organic cotton.
“How can I learn more about your organic bedding?”
We have material resources here, an ultimate pillow guide here, a guide to choosing the perfect duvet here, and a blog with regularly updated resources here. But don’t worry, if you need any personalised advice on how to choose the perfect bedding that’s right for you, you’re welcome to contact us! Our little team will get back to you as soon as possible with the advice you need!
